University City High School Student Joshua Yang Wins 8th Annual AMN/HCC Scholarship

May 4, 2011

SAN DIEGO, May 4, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Joshua Yang, a senior at University City High School, has been named the recipient of the Eighth Annual AMN/HCC Scholarship essay contest presented by the Health Care Communicators (HCC) of San Diego and AMN Healthcare.

The $1,500 scholarship, provided by AMN Healthcare, is awarded to one college or high school student who is interested in pursuing a career in the health care field upon graduation. Yang was presented with his scholarship check by AMN Healthcare at the HCC's "Finest Awards" event, held April 21, 2011, at the downtown San Diego Hard Rock Hotel.

"Joshua Yang is an inspiring example of our bright future and the impact that can be made through innovative healthcare communication," said Susan Salka, AMN Healthcare's president and CEO.  "This is our eighth year in recognizing and rewarding individuals who have a vision of how they can contribute as a healthcare communicator. We look forward to continuing to celebrate more of our amazing young communicators in the years to come," Salka added.

Yang is a longtime volunteer at the Arthritis Foundation of San Diego and Imperial Counties, serving on the annual Arthritis Walk committee for five years.  He was drawn to volunteer at the Arthritis Foundation because his mother suffers from rheumatoid arthritis.  With the help of the AMN/HCC Scholarship, Joshua's goal is to become a rheumatologist and clinical researcher.  He recently shadowed a rheumatologist at Scripps Mercy Hospital, further inspiring his passion.

Yang plans to enter University of California at San Diego this fall as a freshman and major in bio-engineering.  Upon graduation, he hopes to be able to stay in San Diego and begin his career, while continuing to volunteer.

The theme of the 2011 scholarship essay contest was "Why I Plan to Enter the Field of Health Care After College Graduation," and applicants were asked to submit an essay on the topic and also obtain a letter of recommendation from a teacher or other mentor.

Tina Lorimer, Controller for the Arthritis Foundation Pacific Region, wrote in her recommendation letter for Yang, "Having known Joshua for five years as his mentor and supervisor at the Arthritis Foundation, Pacific Region, I have seen throughout the years how Joshua has demonstrated himself as an individual who has strength, leadership, determination, and passion on the work with which he is involved."
